Sovereignty isn't a joke to nations drawn under someone else's flag. Because a caption-less map swallowed Canada, Mexico, Greenland, Iceland, Central America and the Caribbean, the burden fell on the smaller parties: Iceland had to summon Ambassador Billy Long, and Sheinbaum had to declare that Mexico is free, independent and sovereign — while the musing drifts on to renaming. Who should have to prove they exist?
A sovereignty argument only holds if we hold ourselves to it, and an American flag draped over Canada, Mexico, Greenland, Iceland and the countries of Central America and the Caribbean cuts against the very principle we ask others to respect. Because no explanation accompanied the post, Iceland was left to summon Ambassador Billy Long and call it inappropriate. That is a self-inflicted cost. Say plainly we claim none of them.
