U.S. cyclospora outbreak reaches record levels as investigators trace produce contamination

How left and right are reading this

Both agree
A record cyclospora outbreak shows contaminated produce is reaching consumers while investigators still have not fully pinned down the source.
They split on
Whether the story is about consumers bearing the cost of a failed food-safety chain, or about restoring supply-chain trust through competent traceback and accountability.

The Facts

  • The CDC says 2026 has become the worst year on record for cyclospora infections in the United States.
  • Since May 1, the CDC has reported 4,173 confirmed domestically acquired cyclospora cases across 41 states, along with 308 hospitalizations and no deaths.
  • The CDC is also investigating more than 7,400 additional reported cases that have not yet been laboratory confirmed.
  • Michigan reported 6,571 cyclosporiasis cases as of July 21, with 102 hospitalizations and no deaths reported by state officials.
  • Cyclospora is a parasite that causes an intestinal illness and spreads through food or water contaminated with human feces, often involving raw produce.
  • Federal and state investigators have linked part of the outbreak to lettuce, and traceback work has pointed to shredded or iceberg lettuce in the supply chain.
  • The exact source of all illnesses remains unresolved, because officials are still investigating and some testing and traceback results have been difficult or inconclusive.

Context

How does cyclospora get into food?

Sources say Cyclospora cayetanensis is spread through human feces and can contaminate food or water when contaminated water is used to grow, wash or process produce NYT,Axios. Researchers cited by The New York Times said they have not found a place other than the human gut where the parasite grows, which is why investigators are examining how human waste entered the food system NYT.

Why are Michigan's case numbers higher than the CDC's national confirmed count?

The CDC's published totals are for laboratory-confirmed domestic cases, while it is also reviewing thousands of additional reports that have not yet been confirmed NYT,Investing.com. Several reports note that many of those additional cases are coming from Michigan and Ohio, and local or state reporting can move faster than the federal confirmation process Investing.com,Fox 8 News.

What food is being investigated?

Officials have said a multistate outbreak has been linked to lettuce, and FDA traceback work has pointed toward shredded or iceberg lettuce in the supply chain Investing.com,Detroit News. But reporting also notes that investigators are still determining the full source of the outbreak, and not every illness has been tied to a single product NYT,Akron Beacon Journal.
