Where Left and Right agree, and where they split
- Where Left and Right agree
- Strengthening Ukraine's air and missile defenses is the meeting's central business, built around the priority list and threat assessment Ukraine itself submitted beforehand.
- Where Left and Right split
- The alliance producing a diplomatic path to end the war, or European capitals stepping up to fill Ukraine's defense gaps themselves.
- Why they won’t converge
- The divide is one of time-horizon: the left judges the 36th meeting against an endpoint to the war, while the right judges it against whether European capitals are filling capability gaps now.
How left and right read it
Ending a war, not administering it indefinitely, is the test any alliance process should have to meet — and this is the thirty-sixth such meeting, with a fresh list of priority air and missile defense needs submitted before it convenes. Because strengthening those defenses is again the key issue, the burden sits on the officials opening the session, Wes Streeting and Boris Pistorius among them, to show where this ends. A threat assessment is not a plan. What matters most is a diplomatic path out.
Whose capitals fill the gaps in Ukraine's air defenses is the question that actually matters here, and the answer should be Europe's. The opening remarks belong to Wes Streeting and Boris Pistorius, with Mark Rutte taking part, so the continent's own defense ministers already own this file. Ukraine submitted its priority air and missile defense list to NATO. Which European stockpiles will meet it?
