Two Firefighting Crew Members Die as Helicopters Collide West of Athens Amid Greek Wildfires

Sunday, August 2, 2026Science & ClimateWell-covered3 frames

How left and right are reading this

Both agree
Winds of 100 km/h made aerial firefighting physically impossible, and two crew died in conditions where ground teams could not open their vehicle doors — a real cost, honestly stated.
They split on
Whether the story is about public crews improvising with leased aircraft against demands their systems weren't built for, or about a leader telling citizens plainly that weather can outrun any amount of hardware.

The Facts

  • Two Bell helicopters leased by Greece's fire service collided midair on Sunday, August 2, 2026, over the Psatha area west of Athens after taking off from Elefsina military airport; each carried two crew members.
  • Two crew members died — a Greek and a Danish national aboard one helicopter — while the second helicopter's crew, a Greek and a British national, survived after releasing its water load and flying away.
  • The wildfire the crews were fighting, northwest of Athens, has destroyed more than 100 homes, and settlements on the Ionian island of Kefalonia were evacuated as a separate blaze spread.
  • Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Greece faced "extreme" weather conditions with winds often reaching 100 km/h and warned the coming days would be "extremely difficult," noting that even dozens of available aircraft could not operate safely in such winds.
  • More than 16,000 hectares of forest and agricultural land burned in Greece over the course of a week, with the fire front reported at roughly 35 kilometres from Athens.
  • High winds repeatedly halted aerial firefighting, preventing aircraft from collecting or dropping water because of turbulence, and at one point ground crews near Porto Germeno could not open their vehicle doors.
  • Hundreds of firefighters, supported by aircraft and helicopters, were deployed against the fires, with reinforcements from other European countries; on Monday the fire service said five planes and five helicopters launched at dawn as winds eased, though authorities warned the greater Athens area remained at high risk as temperatures rose.
  • The Greek fires follow blazes in France and Spain that showed signs of easing over the weekend, with Spain lifting a state of emergency near Madrid and roughly 198,000 people allowed to return home in southwestern France.
  • Scientists attribute the record-breaking heatwaves and lack of rain that dried out vegetation across Europe to human-caused climate change, increasing wildfire risk.

Context

What caused the helicopter collision, and is that settled?

The cause has not been established. The fire service said the aircraft were operating in extremely adverse visibility and navigation conditions, and authorities said the exact causes and circumstances had not yet been determined La Nacion,El Tiempo,ElNacional.cat. Television footage showed one helicopter explode and fall in flames after what appeared to be a rotor collision, and reporting described the lower aircraft's main rotor striking the underside of the one above during a water-dropping run Al Jazeera Online,Dawn,Times of India. Initial accounts also differed on casualties: an early AFP report said all four crew were rescued with two in serious condition, while later accounts confirmed two deaths La Nacion,Gulf Daily News Onl…,Quotidiano Libero.

Which areas of Greece are affected?

Fires burned on multiple fronts. The largest was northwest of Athens, in the area of Porto Germeno and Psatha on the Gulf of Corinth, roughly 70 km from the capital, with fronts reported near Agios Nektarios in the Kithairon mountains and northwest of Megara, a town of about 36,000 people Yahoo!,Semana.com Última…,RP Online. Separate blazes forced evacuations on the Ionian island of Kefalonia Gulf Daily News Onl…,NBC News,GMA Network. Earlier in the week, fires on Crete forced the evacuation of about 8,000 tourists and residents around Agia Galini and burned some 4,500 hectares south of Rethymno RFI,Yahoo!.

Why is the threat to the Athens area a particular concern?

The fire front was reported at about 35 kilometres from Athens, and authorities said the metropolitan area remained at high wildfire risk as winds shifted and temperatures rose Antena3,RP Online,Milenio.com. Coverage noted the precedent of the 2018 fire at Mati, a coastal area near Athens, in which 104 people died Milenio.com. Greece was placed on maximum alert in several regions during peak tourist season, with roughly 60 forest and agricultural fires reported in a single 24-hour period Yahoo!,Yahoo!.
