German health institute raises June heat wave death estimate to about 9,600, with 11,900 heat-related deaths so far this year

First covered Thursday, August 6, 2026Science & ClimateWell-covered

The Facts

  • The Robert Koch Institute estimates about 9,600 heat-related deaths in Germany during the week of 22–28 June, up from an earlier estimate of more than 5,000 for that period.
  • The estimated national total of heat-related deaths through 26 July stands at approximately 11,900.
  • That total exceeds every full year since 2016; the previous high was 2018, estimated by different reports at around 8,900 to 9,000 heat-related deaths.
  • Older people account for the large majority of the deaths: more than 6,000 among those aged 85 and over, and roughly 2,900 to 3,000 among those aged 75 to 84.
  • During the late-June heat, temperatures in many parts of Germany reached around 40 degrees Celsius, and in some places above 41 degrees Celsius.
  • The RKI says the revision appeared only now because state-level mortality figures from the Federal Statistical Office are reported with a delay of about five weeks.
  • Regional estimates published alongside the national figures include about 1,650 heat-related deaths in Hesse, about 1,500 in Rhineland-Palatinate, about 410 in Saarland, about 410 in Saxony, about 230 in Thuringia and about 190 in Saxony-Anhalt.
  • The figures are estimates rather than counted cases, and the summer is not over, with temperatures remaining high, so the totals could rise.

Context

How does the RKI arrive at a heat death figure if no one is counted as dying 'of heat'?

The RKI does not count individual cases. It produces statistical estimates by comparing recorded death totals from the Federal Statistical Office with temperature data from 52 weather stations operated by the German Weather Service, and calculates the excess mortality associated with hot weeks DIE WELT,DIE WELT. Each week's figure is recalculated as newer data arrives DIE WELT,DIE WELT.

Why did the estimate for late June nearly double?

The RKI says the full effect of the extremely hot week and the week that followed only became visible now, partly because temperatures at that level had barely or never occurred in Germany before, and partly because state-specific figures from the Federal Statistical Office arrive with a five-week delay DIE WELT,N-tv,Focus.

What period does the current report cover?

The report covers heat-related deaths from 6 April to 26 July DIE WELT,DIE WELT. Because the summer was still ongoing when it was published on 6 August, the state and national totals are provisional ZEIT ONLINE,WEB.DE.

Where Left and Right agree, and where they split

Where Left and Right agree
The 9,600 figure is a modeled estimate revised upward only because state mortality data lags about five weeks — a gap both framings treat as consequential, not incidental.
Where Left and Right split
Whether the story is about people over 85 dying while the heat holds and the data lags, or about how confidently a revised estimate can be reported as a record.

How left and right read it

Left says

The Robert Koch Institute nearly doubled its estimate for the last week of June, to about 9,600 heat-related deaths, bringing the year through 26 July to roughly 11,900 — more than any full year since 2016. More than 6,000 of those deaths were people 85 and older. Heat kills the people least able to escape it. If a five-week data lag is what stands between a heat wave and knowing who died in it, what protection are the oldest actually being offered while the temperatures hold?

Right says

An estimate of more than 5,000 deaths for the last week of June became about 9,600, revised only because state mortality figures arrive roughly five weeks late. These are estimates, not counted cases. When the 2018 benchmark now being surpassed is itself put at anywhere from 8,900 to 9,000 depending on the report, say so as plainly as the headline number.
