ESCORTED CRUDE THROUGH A NARROW STRAITREFRAMED ILLUSTRATION

The Facts

  • The U.S. military has established a protected shipping corridor through a southern channel of the Strait of Hormuz along Oman's coast.
  • Two U.S. officials told Axios that 15 to 20 oil tankers move through the corridor each night.
  • Officials estimate about 10 million barrels of oil a day now leave the strait, roughly half the pre-war volume.
  • The New York Times reported that U.S. forces protected tankers carrying about 5 million barrels a day in July.
  • The New York Times reported that the U.S. escort missions began in May.
  • U.S. forces also help empty tankers enter the Gulf, load crude at UAE, Bahrain and Kuwait ports, and exit.
  • Trump said the Strait of Hormuz is open and that a large number of ships are passing through.
  • Trump said the United States is not currently negotiating with Iran.
  • Iran says the strait will remain closed until Washington lifts its naval blockade and sanctions.
  • U.S.-Iran talks remain at a stalemate, according to reporting on the shipping operation.

Context

Why does the Strait of Hormuz matter to global oil supply?

Roughly one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas passes through the waterway Crypto Briefing. About 15 million barrels of crude a day moved through it before the war NYT, and the wartime disruption sent crude prices sharply higher Axios,Arutz Sheva Israel ….

How much oil is actually getting through, and do the accounts agree?

U.S. officials cited by Axios put the flow near 10 million barrels a day, about half pre-war levels english.news.cn,American Greatness. The New York Times reported a lower figure for U.S.-protected traffic, roughly 5 million barrels a day in July NY Post. Iran, meanwhile, maintains the strait is closed to commercial shipping Crypto Briefing,https://www.ummid.c….

How is the operation run?

Tankers are organized into scheduled inbound and outbound convoys and guided through the southern channel under U.S. military coordination, with American forces providing air cover News18,MoneyControl. Firstpost reported the effort is coordinated by a task force based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina Firstpost. One U.S. official told Axios that American forces have been controlling the southern lane for two months and described the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as "a nuisance" english.news.cn,American Greatness.

Where Left and Right agree, and where they split

Where Left and Right agree
The strait is passable because U.S. warships are making it passable — not because anyone declared it open — and even so only half the pre-war volume gets out.
Where Left and Right split
Whether the story is about a military commitment to oil flows that no one authorized and Trump's no-negotiations stance leaves no exit from, or about the plain fact that only American power keeps the crude moving and no one else will do it.

How left and right read it

Left says

An open-ended military commitment is being built around the movement of oil, and nobody has been asked to justify it. Escorts that began in May now shepherd 15 to 20 tankers a night through a corridor off Oman, yet only about half the pre-war volume gets out — enormous resources spent to restore a fraction of what once flowed freely. And with Trump saying Washington isn't negotiating with Iran, there is no exit, only entrenchment. Diplomacy is the harder job. It is also the necessary one.

“The U.S. military is deploying significant resources to get a limited amount of oil through the strait -- something it did not have to do before the war, when tankers sailed freely through the waterway.” — The New York Times↗

Right says

A waterway is not open because someone says it is open; it is open because power keeps it open. That is why the escorts running since May count for more than any pronouncement — 15 to 20 tankers a night through the corridor off Oman, five million barrels a day covered in July, empty hulls shepherded in to load at UAE, Bahrain and Kuwait ports. Rhetoric confuses. Who else carries this work?

“The "rhetoric" coming from both sides of the conflict over the Strait of Hormuz has "caused considerable confusion and doubt," CNN's David Goldman understatedly observed.” — National Review↗
