Iranian Army Chief Announces $30,000 Reward for Killing or Capturing US Soldiers

First covered Sunday, August 16, 2026International AffairsWell-covered

The Facts

  • Iran's army announced on Sunday a reward equivalent to $30,000, or 5 billion tomans, for killing or capturing a US soldier.
  • The reward doubles if the killing or capture is carried out by a woman, according to the announcement.
  • Army Commander-in-Chief Major General Amir Hatami made the announcement, as reported by Iran's state news agency IRNA.
  • Hatami said the plan was drawn up after a "large number of requests" from people seeking to contribute financially.
  • Hatami gave no details on where or when the killing or capturing of US soldiers was expected to occur.
  • There has been no known deployment of US ground forces in Iran during the war, apart from an April rescue mission for a downed American airman.
  • Hatami said a weapon used to kill an American would be bought for double its value and placed in a museum under construction.
  • Hatami also said US forces are no longer permitted to enter the Persian Gulf, the Sea of Oman or the Strait of Hormuz.
  • A June 17 memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran, which set a ceasefire and a 60-day period to resolve outstanding issues, expired on Monday.
  • A senior IRGC commander said Iran's defensive posture would take on an "offensive" character and warned of "strategic surprises."
  • Hatami said Trump's remark about declaring the Strait of Hormuz US territory was a "major mistake" and that Iran's defenders "will break your legs."
  • Trump said in a speech on Friday that he would soon declare the Strait of Hormuz "a territory of the United States."

Context

How much money is being offered, and in what currency?

Hatami cited 5 billion tomans, described by reporting as an informal unit equal to 10,000 Iranian rials, which sources put at roughly $30,000 or about 26,000 euros GULF NEWS,infobae,LaVanguardia. Women who carry out such an act would receive double, or about $60,000 NDTV,India News, Breakin….

Why is it unclear how the reward could be claimed?

The offer refers to "invading" American military personnel, but sources report no known US ground deployment inside Iran during the war other than an April mission to recover a downed American airman infobae,News.com.au,LaVanguardia. Hatami did not say where or when such an act was expected to take place News18,Hindu.

What is the broader diplomatic context?

A memorandum of understanding signed in June halted US and Israeli attacks on Iran and was meant to address Tehran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, but it expired Monday with no breakthrough in permanent peace talks News18,Independent. Sources report shipping traffic through the strait has seen little improvement, with both sides maintaining blockades Independent, and both accusing the other of non-compliance News18.

Where Left and Right agree, and where they split

Where Left and Right agree
The bounty is incitement against American service members, and the absence of any named place or time makes it a threat without softening it.
Where Left and Right split
Whether the story is about shrinking the number of Americans within reach of a bounty, or about answering a foreign claim on American lives and sea lanes with deterrence.

How left and right read it

Left says

The first obligation here is to keep American service members out of reach of a bounty, and that argues for fewer bodies in harm's way, not more. Hatami named no place and no time for these killings, and no US ground forces are known to be in Iran beyond an April rescue of a downed airman — so the exposure is something policy still controls. Condemn the bounty as the incitement it is, protect the troops already deployed, and press for talks rather than another escalation.

“However, since then there has been little improvement in shipping traffic, as Iran and the US have continued with their respective blockades of Hormuz and Iranian ports.” — The Independent↗

Right says

No foreign commander prices American lives or decides where American forces sail. So a bounty on soldiers, doubled when a woman collects, paired with a declaration barring US forces from the Persian Gulf, the Sea of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz, is a claim on our people and our navigation that vagueness about execution does not soften. The response owed is deterrence credible enough that neither is tested.

“Tehran's military chief put out a $30,000 reward for anyone who kills or captures a US soldier -- with the reward doubled for Iranian women -- but it remains unclear how they can carry out the orders.” — New York Post↗
