A GIRL, AID WORKERS AND A MILITARY INQUIRYREFRAMED ILLUSTRATION

The Facts

  • Israel's military said Wednesday it will open a criminal investigation into the January 2024 killing of Palestinian girl Hind Rajab in Gaza City.
  • The military acknowledged for the first time that its troops fired at the car carrying Rajab and six family members.
  • An earlier Israeli preliminary inquiry had concluded that its forces were not present near the vehicle or within firing range.
  • A second criminal investigation will cover the March 2025 killings of 15 emergency and aid workers in Gaza.
  • The decisions followed reviews by the military's Fact-Finding and Assessment Mechanism, which issued conclusions on five incidents.
  • The military said there was no reasonable suspicion of criminal misconduct in the April 2024 killing of seven World Central Kitchen aid workers.
  • Two Palestinian Red Crescent paramedics dispatched to reach Rajab were killed when their ambulance was hit.
  • Rights groups say Israeli military investigations into troops' conduct have rarely resulted in convictions.

Context

Why do reports give different ages for Hind Rajab?

Accounts vary. The New York Times describes her as 6 years old NYT, while the BBC, The Guardian, NDTV and infobae describe her as 5 BBC,Guardian,NDTV,infobae. She was killed in Gaza City in January 2024; her body was recovered from a bullet-riddled car days after she was last heard from during a phone call to the Palestinian Red Crescent on 29 January 2024 infobae,Guardian.

Who will actually conduct these investigations?

The cases were referred to the Israeli military's own police. Infobae reported the Rajab case will be investigated by the Criminal Investigations Division of the Military Police infobae, and the New York Times said the two cases were transferred to the military police NYT. Reuters reported the referrals are internal criminal investigations that followed the military's Fact-Finding and Assessment Mechanism review U.S. News & World R…. NDTV noted the question of whether an independent body could investigate instead of the military remains open NDTV.

What is the broader context in Gaza?

The New York Times reported that more than 70,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza during the war, and that the referrals followed widespread international condemnation, with rights groups and governments accusing Israel of war crimes NYT. Gaza's health ministry put the toll at 73,407 as of its most recent update, and said 1,273 people have been killed since a ceasefire took effect on 10 October 2025 Haberler. Israeli strikes have continued during the ceasefire period BBC,Haberler.

Where Left and Right agree, and where they split

Where Left and Right agree
The reversal is the load-bearing fact: an inquiry that placed troops nowhere near the car has been overturned by an admission they fired, and referrals alone settle nothing.
Where Left and Right split
Whether the story is about an institution that cleared itself once and cannot credibly judge itself again, or about an army that corrected its own record and must now finish the job.

How left and right read it

Left says

An institution that ruled itself absent from the scene cannot be the measure of its own guilt. It admitted only now that troops fired on the car, reversing an earlier inquiry that placed its forces nowhere near it, and the paramedics dispatched to reach the child were killed too. Because such investigations have rarely ended in convictions, these referrals earn no presumption of accountability.

“The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) repeatedly denied its troops had been present in the area near the incident, but investigations by media and others found evidence that strongly suggested nearby Israeli tanks were responsible.” — The Guardian↗

Right says

An army that can correct its own record is an army worth defending. The military's earlier inquiry placed its forces nowhere near the car carrying Hind Rajab, yet it has now acknowledged its troops fired and opened a criminal investigation, along with a second into the killings of 15 emergency and aid workers — while finding no reasonable suspicion in the World Central Kitchen deaths. So the question is whether these referrals are carried to real findings against real individuals?

See this differently than someone you know would?
