Context

What is Arctic Sentry?

Arctic Sentry is a NATO mission launched in February 2026 to strengthen the alliance's military presence in the far north Українська …,Reuters,URA.RU. Germany's Bundeswehr said at the time that the operation was intended to keep important shipping routes in the North Atlantic open DIE WELT. Moscow protested the mission when it began, and Lavrov's article describes the associated exercises as aggressive in nature Українська …,Reuters.

Why has the Arctic become contested?

Reuters reports that NATO members have increased their focus on the Arctic amid tensions with Russia over the war in Ukraine and US President Donald Trump's push to acquire Greenland Reuters,RTE.ie. Russia holds the largest military presence and infrastructure in the region, including a naval fleet with nuclear-armed submarines, and views the Arctic as its sphere of interest, while China has increased its activity there in recent years, largely in partnership with Moscow Reuters,Economic Times.

What did Lavrov say about Arctic cooperation institutions?

Lavrov said one manifestation of Western policy toward Russia has been the blocking of previously effective multilateral cooperation mechanisms in the Far North Lenta.ru,РИА Новости. He said the Arctic Council remains the only intergovernmental format still functioning and is approaching its anniversary 'not in the best shape' РИА Новости,Lenta.ru. He also said that outside NATO, most countries remain willing to work with Moscow on mutually beneficial terms RT.

Where Left and Right agree, and where they split

Left and right largely agree on this one.

Where Left and Right agree
Both read the burden as falling on whoever expands military presence in the Far North, and both treat the Arctic Council as a channel worth preserving rather than spending.
Where Left and Right differ in emphasis
Both demand justification before militarizing; one because sanctions and confrontation punish joint cooperation itself, the other because no case has been made that national security requires expansion.
Why they won’t converge
The divide is empirical, not moral: both sides prize restraint, but they hold opposite causal beliefs about whether added allied presence deters incidents or manufactures them — and a quiet Arctic lets each claim vindication.

How left and right read it

Left says

The burden of proof belongs to whoever wants to militarize the Arctic, not to those asking why. A new alliance mission to bolster presence in the far north raises the odds of the kind of incident that can escalate into armed confrontation with catastrophic consequences, and the region's one surviving intergovernmental cooperation format is exactly what such a posture strains. Sanctions that reach companies and individuals from other countries in joint Arctic projects punish cooperation itself; that cooperation, not confrontation, is what deserves defending.

“Yet, earlier this month, I, my fellow editors and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration personnel were informed that support for the Arctic Report Card -- our flagship annual report since 2006 -- is canceled.” — Washington Post↗

Right says

Before the alliance treats the Far North as another theater of confrontation, someone should have to justify why our security requires it — the presumption belongs to restraint, not to expansion. Arctic Sentry adds allied presence in a region where Moscow already claims direct threats to its security and warns of rising risks of incidents that could provoke armed confrontation. Because the Arctic Council is the last surviving cooperation format there, that channel is worth keeping rather than spending.
