North Korea Warns of 'Additional Military Options' After Japan's First Tomahawk Test; Projectile Launched a Day Later

How left and right are reading this

Both agree
Neither read disputes the sequence or its weight: a first Tomahawk launch from the Chokai, US-transferred missiles, an unspecified threat from Pyongyang, and a projectile the next day.
They split on
Whether the story is about an arms spiral whose miscalculation costs land on regional civilians, or about an ally arming itself against a veto Pyongyang has not earned.

The Facts

  • Kim Yo Jong, sister of Kim Jong Un and a senior Workers' Party of Korea official, said in a statement carried by KCNA on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, that North Korea would take "additional military options" in response to Japan's military buildup.
  • Kim's statement was prompted in part by Japan's test-firing of a US-made Tomahawk long-range cruise missile from the Aegis-equipped destroyer Chokai in the Pacific Ocean, described by sources as Japan's first such launch.
  • She also cited other Japanese missile test-firings and Japan's participation in a US-led joint military exercise in the Philippines in May.
  • Kim accused the United States of enabling Japan's strike capability, saying Washington transferred the Tomahawk missiles and prepared the vessel and conditions for the test launch, and said Washington and its allies were raising regional tensions.
  • The statement followed Japan's approval of its annual defence white paper, in which Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said the country's military needed to be strengthened with a "sense of urgency and crisis" and which flagged growing threats from China, Russia and North Korea.
  • Kim urged the international community to be vigilant and to prevent Japan from becoming a military power, arguing Tokyo's buildup threatens neighbouring states including North Korea.
  • North Korea did not specify what the "additional military options" would consist of.
  • A day after the statement, on Thursday, August 6, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said North Korea had fired at least one unidentified projectile — possibly a ballistic missile — toward the body of water Seoul calls the East Sea and Japan calls the Sea of Japan; South Korean and Ukrainian-language reports said no consequences for Japan were recorded.
  • Japan has gradually moved away from its post-World War II defence-only posture by increasing military spending, expanding defence agreements and deploying missile launchers on outlying islands.

Context

What did Japan actually test, and when?

Japan's Defence Ministry said the destroyer Chokai conducted a launch of a US-made Tomahawk long-range cruise missile in the Pacific Ocean, reported as the country's first such test infobae,Hindu. One Russian report dated the launch to July 31 Коммерсант.…. Kim Yo Jong noted that Tokyo did not publicly disclose the exercise area, the number of missiles or the target range, but argued the test placed North Korea and other neighbouring countries within strike range infobae.

Why does this matter beyond the rhetoric?

The exchange reflects a broader shift in East Asian security: Japan has been increasing defence spending, expanding defence pacts and deploying missile launchers on outlying islands, while its new defence white paper identifies China, Russia and North Korea as growing threats infobae,Московский …,Hindu. North Korea has expanded its nuclear and missile programmes since diplomacy between Kim Jong Un and then-US President Donald Trump collapsed in 2019 over the scope of denuclearisation and sanctions relief, and has repeatedly declared itself an irreversible nuclear state Hindu,РБК-Украина.

Is the August 6 launch confirmed as a response to Japan?

No. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff reported at least one unidentified projectile, possibly a ballistic missile, fired on Thursday morning, and outlets noted it came a day after Kim Yo Jong's statement Le Monde,lindependant.fr,Hindu. Sources describe the timing but do not report an official North Korean explanation linking the launch to Japan, and the projectile's type was not immediately confirmed lindependant.fr,РБК-Украина.
