Belgian court orders former diplomat Etienne Davignon to stand trial over Patrice Lumumba’s 1961 killing
The Facts
- A Brussels court ruled that Etienne Davignon, a 93-year-old former Belgian diplomat, should stand trial over his alleged role in events connected to Patrice Lumumba’s 1961 killing.
- Prosecutors accuse Davignon of involvement in Lumumba’s unlawful detention and transfer, as well as degrading or humiliating treatment.
- Davignon was a junior or trainee diplomat in the former Belgian Congo at the time of Lumumba’s killing and later became a senior European official, including vice-president of the European Commission.
- Davignon is the only surviving member of the group of Belgians accused in the case brought by Lumumba’s family in 2011.
- Lumumba was Congo’s first prime minister after independence from Belgium in 1960, and he was killed in January 1961.
- Belgian authorities have previously acknowledged responsibility for Lumumba’s death in some form, including a parliamentary finding that Belgium was morally responsible and later apologies to his family and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
- The court decision can be appealed, and Davignon has denied the charges.
