U.S.-Iran 60-Day Negotiating Deadline Expires Without Deal; Trump Threatens Oman

First covered Monday, August 17, 2026U.S. PoliticsWell-covered

The Facts

  • The 60-day U.S.-Iran Memorandum of Understanding, signed June 17, expired Monday with no agreement reached.
  • Trump told Fox News the U.S. would "bomb the shit out of" Oman if it "gets in the way" of U.S.-Iran talks.
  • Oman is not a party to the war, describes itself as neutral, and has long served as a backchannel between Washington and Tehran.
  • Trump said the U.S. was not seeking to extend the interim ceasefire agreement with Iran.
  • Trump said Iran would not make the kind of deal he considers necessary, adding the U.S. aim is to prevent an Iranian nuclear weapon.
  • A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Iran would shift to a "fully offensive" military posture because talks have stalled.
  • Iran's parliament speaker and lead negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said the Strait of Hormuz will stay closed until the U.S. lifts a naval blockade, oil sanctions and asset freezes.
  • The Strait of Hormuz, a route for much of the Gulf's oil exports, has been effectively closed since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on February 28.

Context

What was the Memorandum of Understanding that just expired?

It was an interim deal signed in June by the U.S. and Iran that declared an "immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts" and set a 60-day window to negotiate a final agreement limiting Iran's nuclear program Aol,NYT. It unraveled quickly: Trump said it was "over" on July 7 and Iran's foreign ministry declared it "suspended" a week later Aol. Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei called the 60-day deadline "irrelevant," saying Washington violated the memorandum soon after signing and that no negotiations ever began under it News18.

Why is Oman at the center of this dispute?

Oman shares territorial waters in the Strait of Hormuz with Iran and has facilitated U.S.-Iran contacts for years while maintaining it is a neutral mediator NYT,BBC,infobae. In recent weeks Muscat has run its own talks with Tehran on reopening the strait; Iran's foreign ministry spokesman said the two sides had agreed on a map for a safe shipping route BBC,infobae, infobae. Trump's threat, his second directed at Oman, came shortly after those reports Aol,infobae.

What else did Trump say about contacts with Iran?

In the same Fox News interview, Trump said the U.S. had a direct backchannel with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps that bypasses mediators and Tehran's political officials BBC,infobae. The IRGC later denied it was involved in talks with the U.S. BBC. Trump also urged Iran to raise "the white flag of surrender" and said he had no timetable, writing on Truth Social that the number one goal remains preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon infobae,News18.

Where Left and Right agree, and where they split

Left and right largely agree on this one.

Where Left and Right agree
Both read threatening to bomb neutral Oman as self-defeating: it widens the war and burns the one backchannel while Hormuz stays shut and the interim deal lapses.
Where Left and Right differ in emphasis
Left and right both reject the Oman threat: one asks who escalated, the other counts the cost.

How left and right read it

Left says

Whoever escalates owes a justification; threatening to bomb a neutral state that has long carried messages between Washington and Tehran is none. The interim agreement was left to lapse rather than extended, so what remains is a closed Strait of Hormuz, much of the Gulf's oil behind it, and a posture Tehran now describes as fully offensive. Who ends the war he started?

“As a crumbling truce with Iran officially collapsed on Monday, President Trump signaled his frustration at his inability to resolve a war that he started but cannot seem to end.” — The New York Times↗

Right says

Every week Hormuz stays shut, Americans pay at the pump for leverage Tehran never had to earn — closed since February 28, with Iran's lead negotiator pricing reopening at sanctions relief and an end to the blockade. Yet threatening to bomb Oman, the neutral state that carries the messages, widens the war rather than narrowing the deal. Keep the aim where it belongs. No Iranian nuclear weapon, ships moving.

“The Islamic regime has used the strait, where nearly one-fifth of the world's seaborne oil traverses, for leverage during the conflict - repeatedly causing gas prices to spike as November's midterm elections approach.” — New York Post↗

This isn't a story about one reckless threat both sides already call self-defeating — it's about whether the war's measure is who owns the escalation or what containment costs at the pump.

See this differently than someone you know would?
