Where Left and Right agree
Left and right largely agree on this one.
- What both sides accept
- The undisclosed, already-contracted Belarus potash deal is no substitute for Canada, and the US should resolve the trade dispute instead.
- Where Left and Right differ in emphasis
- Both sides reject the Belarus deal and back settling with Canada; the left stresses Minsk's repression and Russia ties, the right stresses unverifiable pricing arithmetic.
How left and right read it
Farmers deserve supply certainty, not a swap of a dependable partner for an unproven promise. Trump has disclosed no timing, volume, or terms for the Belarus deal, and Lukashenko says the potash is already contracted, while Canada, source of most US imports, sits sidelined by a dispute Washington keeps pressing. That gamble, pursued despite Minsk's repression and backing of Russia's invasion, is reason enough to end the Canada dispute instead.
“The announcement on Monday shows Washington's willingness to pursue dialogue with Minsk despite its repression of dissidents and support for Russia's invasion of Ukraine.” — The Guardian
Real prices come from real supply. A claim that Belarusian potash costs substantially less means little without timing, volume, or terms, and Lukashenko says the available volumes are already contracted — so the arithmetic of undercutting the neighbor that supplies most US potash imports doesn't close. Potash feeds crop yields, which is why the answer is settling the Canada dispute and buying on verifiable terms, not on an announcement.
“By purchasing potash from Belarus, Mr. Trump is seeking to undercut Canada, which accounts for roughly 80% of total U.S. potash imports worth about $5.2 billion annually.” — Washington Times
