Trump tells allies affected by Hormuz disruption to buy U.S. oil or "take" the strait themselves
The Facts
- On Tuesday, Trump said countries unable to get jet fuel because of the Strait of Hormuz should buy from the United States or go to the strait and "just TAKE IT."
- Trump said the United States would not help those allies anymore, writing that they would have to "learn how to fight for yourself."
- Trump specifically singled out the United Kingdom in his post as an example of a country affected by the Strait of Hormuz disruption.
- Trump also criticized France in a separate post, saying it had been "VERY UNHELPFUL" and alleging it did not allow planes carrying military supplies to Israel to fly over French territory.
- The comments came amid tensions between the Trump administration and some European allies over their refusal to become more involved in the war against Iran.
- The Strait of Hormuz is a major global energy chokepoint through which about one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas passes.
- Multiple reports said the conflict has disrupted or choked off oil tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and contributed to higher energy prices.
