The Facts

  • The U.S. national average diesel price hit a record $5.85 a gallon on Friday, according to AAA.
  • The new average surpasses the previous record of about $5.81 a gallon set in June 2022.
  • Diesel averaged $3.71 a gallon a year earlier, making the current price roughly 60 percent higher.
  • Diesel prices are up about 55 percent since the U.S.-Iran war began in late February.
  • Iran's near-closure of the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted flows through a waterway carrying about one-fifth of global crude supply.
  • Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian oil refineries have reduced diesel output from the world's second-largest diesel exporter.
  • Diesel powers freight trucking, rail, farm machinery and construction equipment across the U.S. economy.
  • Some businesses have already passed higher fuel costs to consumers through added fees on online orders and shipments.
  • California has the highest state average at about $7.70 a gallon.
  • Regular gasoline averaged roughly $4.15 a gallon Friday, below the $5.01 record set in June 2022.
  • The price record comes weeks before November's U.S. midterm elections.

Context

Why is diesel setting records when crude oil is not?

Fuel prices reflect refining capacity as well as crude costs Yahoo! Finance. Brent crude has traded between roughly $73 and $126 a barrel since late February and was near $95 on Friday Yahoo! Finance. Reporting points to a global refinery shortage, damaged Russian refineries and disrupted Middle East product shipments as the binding constraint NBC News,Yahoo! Finance. TotalEnergies chief Patrick Pouyanne said in August there was not a 'single tanker of products' moving out of the Strait of Hormuz Yahoo! Finance.

How does this reach consumers who don't buy diesel?

Diesel moves most U.S. freight, so higher fuel costs raise transportation expenses for a wide range of goods WTOP,NBC News. Sources cite groceries and perishables such as produce and meat as among the most immediate pressure points, along with apparel, furniture and lumber WTOP,Aol,NBC News. Some retailers have already added fees to online orders and mailed packages WTOP.

What is the political context?

The record arrives ahead of November's midterm elections News18,Clarin. An AP-NORC poll this summer found two in three U.S. adults disapproved of President Trump's handling of the economy Clarin, and French coverage cited a 33 percent approval rating for Trump overall BFMTV. Trump has pledged to 'substantially lower Gas Prices for all Americans' through an oil deal Aol.

Where Left and Right agree, and where they split

Where Left and Right agree
Record diesel is a direct cost of the war with Iran, landing on truckers, farmers and consumers already paying added shipment fees — and neither framing treats continued endurance as acceptable.
Where Left and Right split
Whether the story is about workers with no cushion who are owed relief, or about a foreign commitment whose price to Americans argues for ending the involvement.
Why they won’t converge
The divide is over values, not evidence: one side reads the price as a distributional injustice demanding relief for those absorbing it, the other as a verdict on whether the commitment is worth its cost — the same number answers different questions.

How left and right read it

Left says

The measure of a war is not the map but the household budget, and this one is now being paid for at the pump by truckers, farmers and construction crews who have no cushion against a roughly 60 percent jump in a year. Because diesel moves freight, rail and farm machinery, those costs don't stay put — they already show up as added fees on ordinary shipments and online orders. As the Washington Post notes, prices have run hot "since President Donald Trump launched the war against Iran at the end of February"; a conflict whose costs land hardest on working people owes them an off-ramp, not another quarter of endurance.

“The price has been running hot, often above $4 a gallon, since President Donald Trump launched the war against Iran at the end of February.” — Washington Post↗

Right says

The first question about any foreign commitment is what it costs the people footing the bill. Record diesel at $5.85, up about 55 percent since the war with Iran began, is that bill, because a near-closed strait carrying a fifth of global crude has squeezed the fuel that moves freight, rail, farm machinery and construction at home. Ending the involvement squeezing that supply, rather than sustaining it, must come first.

“High diesel prices reflect the crimp on the global supply chain due to the conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.” — Washington Examiner↗
