Houthis Say They Hit Saudi Oil Tanker Off Yanbu in Northern Red Sea; Riyadh Has Not Commented

First covered Wednesday, August 5, 2026Business & MarketsWell-covered3 frames

How left and right are reading this

Both agree
A declared blockade is now reaching the northern Red Sea route Saudi exports depend on because Hormuz is closed, with Saree openly threatening to close what remains.
The split
Left and right both see escalation off Yanbu — they split on who the blockade indicts.

This isn't only a story about a tanker off Yanbu — it's about whether the outrage belongs to blockades as a weapon against civilians, or to an armed group claiming the power to decide who sails.

The Facts

  • The Houthis said on Wednesday they attacked the Saudi oil tanker Wafa with ballistic missiles in the northern Red Sea off the coast of Yanbu, with military spokesman Yahya Saree saying the missiles hit accurately.
  • Saree said the tanker was the eighth Saudi vessel targeted since the group announced a maritime blockade of Saudi shipping on July 22.
  • The group said 29 additional Saudi-linked tankers had been forced to change course or turn back in the Red Sea and Arabian Sea since the blockade was declared.
  • The Houthis framed the strike as part of a 'blockade for blockade' approach, which they present as a response to restrictions imposed on Yemen by the Saudi-led coalition, including control of Yemeni airspace.
  • Saudi authorities did not confirm the attack or respond to requests for comment, and the Houthi spokesman did not say when the strike took place.
  • Saudi Arabia currently ships a large share of its oil exports through the Red Sea port of Yanbu to bypass the blocked Strait of Hormuz, making the northern Red Sea route commercially consequential.
  • The Houthis said Saudi shipping had been rerouting to the northern Red Sea to avoid the Bab el-Mandeb strait, and threatened to expand operations there to close remaining routes to Saudi vessels.
  • A day earlier, the Houthis claimed a drone attack on Najran airport in southwestern Saudi Arabia near the Yemeni border, which suspended airport operations; the group called it a response to alleged Saudi drone incursions over Saada and Hajjah provinces.
  • Separately, an Indian cargo ship identified as the Faize Noore Oliya sank in the Red Sea south of Hodeidah after being hit, and its 14 crew members were rescued; Yemen's internationally recognized government blamed the Houthis and called for a stronger international response.
  • The Houthis have fought for more than a decade against Yemen's internationally recognized government and its Saudi-led backers; sources report the conflict re-escalated in recent weeks, including airstrikes in Sanaa, after which the group began targeting Saudi shipping.
