Congo's Ebola Outbreak Passes 5,000 Confirmed Cases; WHO Says Epidemic Is Not Under Control

First covered Tuesday, August 18, 2026Science & ClimateWell-covered

The Facts

  • Congo's government data showed 5,021 confirmed Ebola cases as of Aug. 16.
  • The outbreak has recorded 2,378 deaths, according to Congolese health authorities.
  • The death toll makes this the deadliest Ebola outbreak in Congo's history, exceeding the 2,299 deaths of the 2018-2020 epidemic.
  • It is the second-largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded, behind the 2014-2016 West Africa outbreak with 28,616 cases and over 11,300 deaths.
  • The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo species of Ebola, for which no vaccine or specific treatment is approved.
  • Congo declared the outbreak, its 17th, on May 15, 2026, several weeks later than the first suspected spread.
  • The affected areas are in northern and eastern Congo, where state presence is fragile and health infrastructure is limited.
  • WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Aug. 18 the epidemic is "far from being under control" and warned of high risk of international spread.

Context

How deadly is this outbreak for those infected?

The case fatality rate stands at roughly 47%, based on 2,378 deaths among 5,021 confirmed cases newsORF.at,RT,Hindu. Congolese health authorities say more than 1,000 patients have recovered newsORF.at,Frankfurter Allgeme…,Spiegel Online.

Why has this outbreak spread faster than previous ones?

Responders and WHO cite delayed detection, overwhelmed surveillance teams, armed conflict, displacement, intense population movement and the absence of treatments Reuters,U.S. News & World R…,CBC News. At one hospital in Ituri Province, staff deaths in April preceded the official declaration, suggesting undetected transmission Al Jazeera Online.

Could the real number of cases be higher than reported?

Health experts say the true figures are likely higher, in part because reported counts cover only the period from May 2026 onward and many deaths occur at home newsORF.at,SRF News,DIE WELT. Authorities are also investigating whether the virus has mutated SRF News.

Where Left and Right agree, and where they split

Where Left and Right agree
The outbreak grew largest exactly where state presence is fragile and health infrastructure thin, with no approved vaccine or treatment for Bundibugyo and containment still not achieved.
Where Left and Right split
Whether the story is about chronic underinvestment in health systems that let a pathogen run, or about a state declaring weeks late and owing neighbors timely notice.

How left and right read it

Left says

An outbreak becomes this large where public health capacity is thinnest, which is why the location matters as much as the pathogen: the affected areas lie in northern and eastern Congo, where state presence is fragile and health infrastructure is limited. With 2,378 deaths, this is now the deadliest Ebola epidemic in Congo's history, and no vaccine or treatment is approved for the Bundibugyo species driving it. Because the WHO's chief calls it far from under control, sustained investment in these health systems cannot remain optional.

Right says

Prompt declaration is the minimum a state owes its neighbors, yet this outbreak was declared several weeks after the first suspected spread — in regions where state presence is fragile and health infrastructure limited. Because no vaccine or treatment is approved for the Bundibugyo species, and the WHO chief warns of high risk of international spread, timely reporting is the standard to demand, not assistance arriving after the deadliest toll in Congo's history.
