Where Left and Right agree, and where they split
- Where Left and Right agree
- Gilman came home gravely ill after more than four years, and no American or Russian prisoner was traded for him — a release both framings treat as a genuine good.
- Where Left and Right split
- A dying citizen's freedom resting on one foreign leader's discretion, or a negotiation that brought an American home without giving anything up.
How left and right read it
A citizen's survival should never be a favor a foreign leader can grant or withhold. Gilman came home only after his family and Global Reach warned he was dying, with Senator Markey describing him as essentially catatonic with severe pneumonia — and he left Russia on a pardon, with thanks offered to Putin for his personal involvement. That is leverage, not rescue. Consular protection cannot rest on goodwill.
“Russia has released a former U.S. marine it imprisoned in 2022 amid fears he was close to death as it tries to curry favor with the Trump administration over its war in Ukraine.” — Washington Post
Getting an American home without paying for him is the point. Trump said the release followed his talks with Putin, that Russia asked for no one in return, and that no exchange took place, and Witkoff, working with Rubio and Kushner, welcomed Gilman off a U.S. government plane bound for a military hospital in Texas. That is presidential diplomacy that gave up nothing, and it should never have looked impossible.
