Russia Releases Former U.S. Marine Robert Gilman After More Than Four Years in Custody

First covered Tuesday, August 11, 2026Rights & JusticeWell-covered

The Facts

  • Russia released Robert Gilman, 32, a Massachusetts resident and former U.S. Marine, after more than four years in custody, and he traveled to the United States on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
  • President Trump announced the release on Truth Social, said it followed his discussions with President Vladimir Putin, described it as being on a "Humanitarian Basis," and said Russia asked for no one in return and no exchange took place.
  • Putin signed a pardon for Gilman on humanitarian grounds, according to U.S. officials and reports.
  • Gilman was detained in January 2022 in the Russian city of Voronezh after being taken off a train, and was convicted of assaulting a police officer while drunk; later convictions for assaulting detention-facility staff raised his total sentence to 10 years.
  • The release followed warnings from Gilman's family and the advocacy group Global Reach that he was gravely ill and at risk of dying; Senator Ed Markey said he had been "essentially catatonic" with a severe case of pneumonia, and a family representative also described a catatonic state.
  • Gilman's family has disputed the Russian allegations against him and said he was held in abusive conditions; his father wrote a 2024 Boston Globe op-ed about his son's illness in detention.
  • Gilman was flown out of Russia on a U.S. government plane and was headed to a U.S. military hospital in Texas for medical and psychological evaluation and treatment, with family members, including his mother, traveling there to be with him.
  • U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff took part in the negotiations, said he welcomed Gilman on his arrival in the United States, thanked Putin for the pardon and his personal involvement, and said he worked with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and envoy Jared Kushner on the case.

Context

What was Gilman convicted of, and why did his sentence grow?

Russian state media reported he was arrested in January 2022 in Voronezh after being removed from a Sukhum–Moscow train for causing a disturbance and then kicking a police officer at a police station while drunk Lenta.ru,Guardian. He was sentenced in 2022 to four and a half years NDTV,USA Today. Additional charges over alleged assaults on prison and detention-facility staff pushed his total sentence to 10 years BBC,infobae,Fox News. Gilman previously said he did not remember the assault and apologized to the officer and to Russia, while his family has consistently denied the allegations against him Guardian,USA Today.

What was reported about his health before the release?

Global Reach, a group advocating for his release, said days earlier that he was gravely ill and at risk of dying infobae,Hindustan Times. Senator Ed Markey said Gilman had been "essentially catatonic" and battling a severe case of pneumonia BBC, and a family representative, Kieran Ramsey, said abusive treatment had put him into "a catatonic state" Fox News. Reuters reported he had been moved from a prison hospital to a psychiatric ward of a regular hospital in a condition assessed as "dissociative stupor" BBC. He was taken to a U.S. military hospital in Texas for evaluation and treatment Lenta.ru,EL MUNDO.

What remains unclear or in dispute?

Trump and other officials said no prisoner exchange took place and that Russia asked for nothing in return NDTV,DIE WELT, while Fox News reported the State Department called Gilman a wrongful detainee and described his release as part of an exchange with Russia Fox News. Sources also differ on his initial sentence, with some reporting four and a half years and others three and a half years before it was extended NDTV,infobae,Hindustan Times. BBC Russian reported that the Kremlin had not yet commented on the pardon at the time of publication, and Gilman's lawyer said she had learned of a possible pardon from journalists and had not seen any documents kp.ru,BBC.

Where Left and Right agree, and where they split

Where Left and Right agree
Gilman came home gravely ill after more than four years, and no American or Russian prisoner was traded for him — a release both framings treat as a genuine good.
Where Left and Right split
Whether the story is about a dying citizen's freedom resting on one foreign leader's discretion, or about a negotiation that brought an American home without giving anything up.

How left and right read it

Left says

A citizen's survival should never be a favor a foreign leader can grant or withhold. Gilman came home only after his family and Global Reach warned he was dying, with Senator Markey describing him as essentially catatonic with severe pneumonia — and he left Russia on a pardon, with thanks offered to Putin for his personal involvement. That is leverage, not rescue. Consular protection cannot rest on goodwill.

“Russia has released a former U.S. marine it imprisoned in 2022 amid fears he was close to death as it tries to curry favor with the Trump administration over its war in Ukraine.” — Washington Post↗

Right says

Getting an American home without paying for him is the point. Trump said the release followed his talks with Putin, that Russia asked for no one in return, and that no exchange took place, and Witkoff, working with Rubio and Kushner, welcomed Gilman off a U.S. government plane bound for a military hospital in Texas. That is presidential diplomacy that gave up nothing, and it should never have looked impossible.

“The U.S. State Department referred to Gilman as a wrongful detainee and said his release was part of an exchange with Russia, telling Fox News that "no other concessions were provided."” — Fox News↗
