Where Left and Right agree, and where they split
- Where Left and Right agree
- North Korea's suspected ballistic missile from Wonsan, following the Sept. 12 short-range launches toward the same waters, is a real pattern both sides treat as demanding a response.
- Where Left and Right split
- Whether the launch is a test that scaled-back drills should survive without reversal, or evidence that visible, trained deterrence must be restored regardless of the talks it disrupts.
- Why they won’t converge
- This is a values divide over what deterrence success looks like: the left judges restraint by whether it can survive provocation, the right judges it by whether the launches ever stop, so identical missiles confirm opposite priors.
How left and right read it
The test of a de-escalation strategy is whether it survives a provocation, and the burden sits on those who would abandon it. A suspected ballistic missile from the Wonsan area, falling outside Japan's exclusive economic zone and following the short-range launches on Sept. 12, is a pattern worth condemning and analyzing closely — but it is not a reason to rebuild the drills that were deliberately scaled back to open space for talks. South Korea convened its National Security Council. So the question is what restraint has to survive before it counts as tried.
“This is despite diplomatic efforts from US president Donald Trump, who recently scaled back a military exercise with South Korea in an apparent effort to revive diplomacy with leader Kim Jong Un.” — The Independent
Deterrence is a capability, not a mood. North Korea fired short-range ballistic missiles toward those same waters on Sept. 12 and then launched a suspected ballistic missile from the Wonsan area on Sunday, so the traffic runs one way while Seoul convenes its National Security Council and analysts work out the flight details. Trained, visible readiness is what the alliance owes itself.
