The Facts

  • Syria's UN ambassador Ibrahim Olabi told the Security Council on September 3, 2026 that Syria had begun destroying former chemical weapons program material.
  • Olabi called it the first destruction operation "since our liberation from the former regime" and a "historic moment."
  • Olabi said it was also the first destruction of such chemical materials on Syrian territory in more than a decade.
  • UN disarmament chief Izumi Nakamitsu said the destruction is taking place under verification by the OPCW Technical Secretariat.
  • The material comes from remnants of a clandestine Assad-era chemical weapons program located in May 2026.
  • OPCW work in Syria uncovered previously undeclared items, including a chemical used in producing nerve agents.
  • Bashar al-Assad's government was toppled in 2024, nearly two years before the destruction operation was announced.
  • A chemical attack in Eastern Ghouta on August 21, 2013 killed more than 1,400 people, according to US intelligence.
  • The Assad government denied any involvement in the 2013 Ghouta attack.

Context

What is the OPCW and what is it doing in Syria?

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is the international chemical weapons watchdog; its Technical Secretariat verifies declarations and destruction Notimérica, infobae. An OPCW deployment in May 2026 led to the discovery of previously undeclared chemical weapons, after which Syria amended its initial declaration in June 2026, declaring an additional production facility, a newly discovered nerve-agent precursor chemical, empty munitions and two storage sites UNifeed. A Technical Secretariat team deployed again in August 2026 UNifeed,Hürriyet.

How much has actually been destroyed so far?

Nakamitsu told the Security Council that an OPCW team verified the irreversible destruction of 42 aerial bombs the previous month, progress she attributed to close cooperation with Damascus infobae. Syrian and UN officials described the operation as a first step rather than the completion of the program's dismantlement Times of Israel FR,Yahoo!.

What remains unresolved?

The United Kingdom told the Security Council that Syria has made important progress in dismantling the former program and that the OPCW Executive Council restored certain measures in July, but said it would continue to support efforts to secure accountability and bring the perpetrators of the 2013 Ghouta attack to justice gov.uk. UN officials also noted that additional undeclared material has continued to surface during inspections UNifeed,Hürriyet.

Where Left and Right agree, and where they split

Left and right largely agree on this one.

Where Left and Right agree
Both read OPCW verification as the load-bearing part: keep inspectors on Syrian soil until nothing undeclared remains, since May 2026 turned up a nerve-agent precursor.
Where Left and Right differ in emphasis
Both want inspectors kept and funded; one because Ghouta's 1,400 dead make loose nerve agents a civilian-protection emergency, the other because verification is disarmament without American deployment.
Why they won’t converge
The divide is trust-in-institution: both sides accept OPCW verification as real, but disagree whether an inspectorate's word about a government born of jihadism is a sufficient guarantee or merely the floor beneath a continuing external commitment.

How left and right read it

Left says

Nerve agents in a stockpile are a civilian-protection problem before they are a diplomatic one, and the only reason anyone can verify a single barrel destroyed is that OPCW inspectors are on the ground doing the verification. That matters concretely: the material now being destroyed comes from remnants located only in May 2026, nearly two years after Assad's government fell in 2024, and inspectors turned up undeclared items including a chemical used to make nerve agents. Ghouta's more than 1,400 dead are the measure. Keep the inspectors there, and funded, until nothing undeclared remains.

Right says

The cheapest disarmament is the kind America doesn't have to carry — which is what verified destruction on Syrian soil, by Syrians, under the OPCW looks like, the first such operation there in more than a decade. That the men doing it came out of jihadism raises the burden of proof on Damascus, not the case for our troops; because undeclared items including a nerve-agent chemical surfaced, that burden stays where it is. Verification, not deployment.

“The government of Syria, under former al-Qaeda jihadist President Ahmed al-Sharaa, confirmed before the United Nations on Thursday that it had begun the process of destroying caches of illicit chemical weapons” — Breitbart↗
