UKHSA estimates 2,877 heat-associated deaths during May and June heatwaves

How left and right are reading this

Both agree
An estimated 2,877 heat deaths in two months, falling hardest on older adults and people with underlying conditions, is a protection failure neither framing disputes or discounts as interim.
They split on
Whether the story is about the emissions driving record-breaking heat, or about what shields vulnerable people during the next red alert before the final count arrives.

The Facts

  • UKHSA's rapid early assessment estimated 2,877 heat-associated deaths during two periods of hot weather in May and June 2026.
  • The total breaks down as an estimated 753 deaths linked to the 24-27 May heat episode and 2,124 linked to the 21-28 June heatwave.
  • The two-month total is almost double the 1,504 heat-associated deaths reported for the whole of summer 2025.
  • UKHSA said 2026 is likely to see the highest number of heat-associated deaths since its records began, surpassing the 2,985 recorded across five heatwaves in 2022.
  • The figures are interim and the annual total could be substantially higher because further hot weather in July has not yet been counted; definitive figures are expected in early 2027.
  • Both spells broke Met Office UK monthly temperature records, with 31.5C recorded at Kew Gardens on 26 May and 38.0C at Lingwood, Norfolk, on 26 June.
  • The June heatwave lasted eight days and triggered a red heat-health alert, only the second time the highest alert level has been issued in England.
  • Report author Dr Ross Thompson, UKHSA principal environmental public health scientist, said the risk falls particularly on more vulnerable people, including older adults and those with underlying medical conditions.
  • The findings have prompted calls for adaptation measures, including from the Climate Change Committee, which has urged steps such as workplace temperature limits and air conditioning in public buildings, alongside expert calls to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
  • The data was released in the same week that drought was declared in half of England after persistent high temperatures and low rainfall.

Context

What is a 'heat-associated death' and how is the number calculated?

The figures are estimates of excess deaths — deaths above the expected level — observed during defined periods of hot weather, produced through what UKHSA calls a rapid early assessment gov.uk. Because the analysis is preliminary, the agency labels the numbers interim and says definitive figures will follow in early 2027 BBC,Metro.

Do the figures cover the whole UK or England only?

UKHSA's report and the UK government's own statement describe the 2,877 estimate as excess deaths in England, and several outlets including the Guardian, Straits Times and AFP-sourced reports frame it that way Guardian, gov.uk,Straits Times,TVN. Other outlets, including the BBC and ITV, reported the same figures as UK-wide, and the temperature records cited are Met Office UK monthly records BBC,ITV Hub.

What happens next and could the toll rise further?

UKHSA has warned the full-year figure could be substantially higher because additional hot spells in July are not yet included in the count BFMTV,EL NUEVO SIGLO. The Met Office has said August is likely to be hotter and drier than usual, and authorities have already declared drought across half of England Mirror,India Today.
